Perl Courses 2008

This year we will again be able to offer courses and seminars with Damian Conway as referent. Damian is the author of several books about Perl and of numerous Perl modules. In addition to his work as Perl instructor and consultant he works closely together with Larry Wall on the definition of Perl 6.

The courses are being organized together with the IT services of ETH Zurich and will be held at the GEP pavillon next to the main mensa of ETH Zurich between 9 and 17h unless marked differently. The courses will be given in English.

Introduction to Perl 5.10: Monday, 18 August 2008 --- Registration
Perl 5.10 adds more useful features to the language than any other release since Perl 5.0.0. This one-day tutorial provides a detailed introduction to those new features, along with practical examples of how they can improve the performance, robustness, and maintainability of your code.
Understanding Regular Expressions: Tuesday, 19 August 2008 --- Registration
This one-day tutorial will introduce beginner and intermediate Perl programmers to the full functionality of Perl's regular expressions. By lunch time, Perl's regexes will no longer seem like a mystery wrapped in an enigma wrapped in line-noise.
Advanced Module Interface Techniques: Wednesday, 20 August 2008 --- Registration
This one-day course presents a minimalist approach to interface design known as "S.A.T." developed by Damian Conway over the past decade. This design philosophy can produce smaller, better focussed, more usable module APIs.
The Productive Programmer: Thursday, 21 August 2008 (9:00-12:30) --- Registration
In addition to describing specific productivity techniques, at a deeper level this course is about laterally re-thinking your workspace, getting you out of your existing ruts, and helping you custom-tailor more efficient ways of interacting with, and automating, your own development environment -- whatever it happens to be.
Applying the Perl virtue of Laziness to your programming environment (even if it's not Unix) can significantly increase your productivity. This class shows you how.
Advanced Technical Presentation Techniques: Thursday, 21 August 2008 (13:30-17:00) --- Registration
Presenting technical information to an audience is one of the hardest tasks any I.T. professional can face. Many technical presentations utterly fail in their primary objective -- to convey a complex idea or argument clearly and convincingly.
This class explains -- and demonstrates -- the key techniques that combine to produce an effective and enjoyable technical presentation.
